Sport and Recreation

Integrated sport and skill riding – This is a therapeutic riding programme which uses equine-assisted activities for the purpose of contributing positively to cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities. Therapeutic riding provides benefits in the areas of therapy, education sport and recreation & leisure. It is in essence teaching riding to people with special needs being aware of the therapeutic benefit. However at Shumbashaba people without disabilities are integrated on a skills basis into the sessions. This provides an important aspect of social integration for everyone concerned reinforcing that disability is a part of normal human existence. Riders are encouraged to ride for the love of the horses and those who wish to compete are facilitated through either the Paralympic or Special Olympic sports systems in conjunction with the South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF). At Shumbashaba we believe that a disability does not limit a person from riding horses; and in addition to the therapeutic benefits, riding also provides recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.
